The first Maple Leaf Foreign Nationals School (FNS) opened in Dalian in 2005. The purpose of the school was to provide elite educational services for foreign families living and working in China. A partnership with the British Columbia Ministry of Education (BC MOE) was the perfect situation to introduce the BC Curriculum at the K-9 level. The BC Curriculum has received global recognition for its strength in areas of literacy and numeracy from the Programme of International Student Assessment (PISA) and consistently ranks as one of the top English language curriculums worldwide. Maple Leaf Foreign Nationals School has since grown with the opening of schools in Wuhan (K-9) and Yiwu (Gr 1-12).

Maple Leaf Foreign Nationals Schools are part of the BC Offshore School program. These schools are recognized as BC schools in every way, and the students receive a Personal Education Number (PEN) that travels with them to any recognized BC school. Furthermore, Maple Leaf Foreign Nationals Schools operate under the supervision of the BC Ministry of Education and undergo rigorous annual inspections for institutional compliance and curricular fidelity. The partnership with the BC MOE also includes specific requirements for teacher certification. British Columbia has one of the strictest teacher education requirements in the world. To be certified, all educators in the BC program must have a university degree and successfully complete training at a recognized and accredited teacher college that includes a supervised and evaluated practicum.
